About the Author


Samuel N. Waruhiu (Sam) was born in Kiambu, Kenya, in 1927. After his primary and high school education in Kenya, he attended Makerere College in Uganda from where he obtained a Diploma in Education at the end of 1950. He obtained a BA degree in 1954 and an LLB (Hons.) degree in 1956 from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, after which he was admitted to the Bar by the Middle Temple Inn
of Court, London, in 1958.

In September that year Sam joined the Royal Technical College, Nairobi which later became University College, Nairobi, where he taught law. Between 1963 and 1966 he was senior lecturer in law, dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Vice Principal of the college.

From 1967 until his retirement in 1997, he practised law in Nairobi and was president of the Law Society of Kenya in 197172. Sam was awarded a fellowship of the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, in 1997, and was appointed senior counsel by His Excellency President Mwai
Kibaki of Kenya in 2003.

In 2011, Sam succumbed to illness after a brave battle over several years. He is survived by Lois Muthoni, four grown children, and three granddaughters.
